So, last week was a little crazy. The discipline was minimal during the week and then Thursday and Friday hit and things went a little nutty. Everything was taken care of without a hitch and all is well but I have to remember to look at each situation differently and that all kids do not need the same thing. While I may be on my 50th electronics violation, it may only be the first one for a particular student. That is my biggest challenge right now. That and one particular student who I have seen EVERY day last week for various things. I would much rather give positive attention than negative and I am trying with this student so if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to send them to me......
Football played their second game in the new stadium and although we lost the game went very smoothly and we had a great crowd. We were able to really enjoy the game this time while ensuring that everyone was safe and the crowd was doing what they needed to do.
Several people have asked me if I am settling in okay and quite a few faculty are asking me if I am okay or if I am leaving soon. I can't tell if that is because they want me to stay or go. They keep asking me if anyone is being mean to me or if I am enjoying the school. I am of course and no one is being outright mean, nothing that I can't handle. So yes, I am settling in. It is great to be back on a campus and working with students. The weather here was hot and humid the first couple of weeks - they wanted to send me back to SC so I could take my weather back with me. It has cooled off and is nice here now. However, my life can never be stable. My principal is resigning to take an Asst Superintendent's position in a district about 15 minutes away. So, nope, no stability here right now at the school. It is going to be fine though, the admin team that I am a part of is great and we each have a strength that compliments each other so no matter who the new principal is, we will be fine. On top of that, the Superintendent is in talks to go to another district, Santa Ana, about 30 minutes west of the district - yes, close to the ocean. So the drama continues...however, it is always good to know people in other places - great sources of information.
I love the students - the population is about 90% free and reduced lunch. They are hungry to make connections with teachers, admin and staff and the students seem to be very receptive to me. They keep saying I have an accent but I keep telling them I don't know what they are talking about - they have the accent. The discipline piece is interesting for me. I know that teachers are their own worst enemies but really??? We hopefully will be implementing some PBIS out this way soon!!!!! Too many rules for students to know in 6-8 different periods depending on their schedules.
I made it to Disneyland with Jessica, Riley and Mowgli Roe over the weekend. I have a year-long pass so when you are ready my friends - come on out - I am ready to go!!! We had a great time and while we were only there from 8:00 am - 12:30 pm, I can always go back because..... I HAVE A YEAR LONG pass and it is only 35-45 minutes from the apartment. Granted it is not Disney World - however, I can get my Disney fix!!!
