Well, I took a non-duty day on Monday to work on my PhD and take Husky to the vet. Today is the day that she gets spayed and declawed. She had to be there at 8:00 am so I got up early this morning to do some laundry and clean a little before she went to the vet. I took her at 7:45 am but ended up not leaving until 8:15 am. The vet was late and he wants to talk with you before you leave your pet for surgery. So, I got back to the apartment about 8:30 am.
I thought I would have some information back for my PhD and I would be ready to go but it did not work that way - I got a little side-tracked. I have a presentation to do on Saturday, October 25th at the California Math Conference and since the new Texas Instruments System update, I have been struggling with a few of the upgrades and forgot how to use one of the sensors. So this morning I worked on that for awhile rather than the PhD. I had a phone call with my friend Jeff Lukens who helped me work through my TI issue and be ready for Saturday! Hooray!!!
I got a call around 12:00 pm that Husky was out of surgery and doing well. They invited me to come and see her so I went about 3:00 pm to see how she was doing and give her a hug. She looks so pathetic but she is very much awake and alert, more than the other cats that I have had put under for surgeries.
She has her little legs all bandaged up so she cannot chew on her claws and the red bandage on the back is the IV port for her so they can give her meds without poking her more. She was so sweet and sat in my arms but you can tell she really wants to play and be up and moving around. I will not be able to get her until Wednesday! Soooo….Squeak will probably enjoy the time as a single kitty.
On Saturday, I could not get into my mailbox so I had to go over to the apartment office and let them know something was wrong. They said they would have someone look at it and call me. Well they called me late Saturday and I was gone so I had to go back over on Monday to pick up my new key and find out what was going on. I was over there for about 30 minutes as well. By the time I turned in the other key, signed for the new key, had polite conversation, checked my box and reported back that all was well more time had gone by. I made it back to the apartment and sent some emails to my committee chair and got my items together and low and behold, before I knew it I looked at the clock and it was 10:50. I looked over chapter 4 some but decided that I could not really do too much with it until I got feedback from my committee chair on chapter 3 so I packed up a few items and went to get my nails done while I read over my work. I know it is not a great use of my time but it was time for them to get done and I was so frustrated about not getting anywhere else that I just needed a break. I then ran to the store to get groceries for the week since I was not around this past weekend and made breakfast for the week. I have been making egg minis that can be warmed up in the microwave in the mornings with vegetables in them. I tried to make them with some egg whites today – not sure how this is going to turn out. I probably need less egg whites and more egg.

Today I was at work until 9:00 am and then I had to go to Illuminate training. This is the program Riverside Unified School District is using for a student management system to be able to run reports and find out information about students. The training was a review of what I already knew and they did start working on learning how to run reports but not until 2:00 pm and I have to leave by 2:15 pm to get back to school for a 504 meeting. Since I was gone on Monday and Tuesday I felt very far behind and ended up staying pretty late at school to get things completed. This involved moving more equipment around and just basically running reports for information and sending emails.
I also stayed to see the Choir Concert on Tuesday night. This is the first performance for the new choir director. He has done a fabulous job with the students and this concert featured all the students that are in Chorus. The students did a fabulous job coming in and off stage and these are students that many did not want to be in the class. Mr. Kociela has done a fabulous job of singing contemporary music and getting students interested!!

Today was another odd day. I went to school and was there until 8:45 am and then left to go to the Bullying Conference at the Riverside Convention Center. I would love to say that I learned a lot and it was informative but I have to say I really away fairly despondent about the idea of Bullying. Basically, students start as early as 3rd grade and in 6th grade it is the worst. However, it might be worse in high school but more students are just not reporting that bullying is occurring so it only looks like it is decreasing. They also pointed out the research says that peer mediation does not work because the kids do not know enough about how to handle situations. Pulling the bully's together for interventions do not work because it pulls all the socially adept students together and puts them on a stage to make them more popular. Creating a group for the targets does not work because it singles out the students and identifies them as weak therefore everyone sees who is socially weak. The only thing they really told us was the effects of bullying are decreased when students have one good friend they can trust and talk with and an adult who will listen but may not try to solve the problem. When we broke for lunch, I had not good answers and only more questions!!!
I had to pick Husky up today so I left the conference early to go and get her. If I don't leave work by 4:00 pm I get stuck in traffic so I stay until 6:00 pm so I can just get home. Since the vet closes at 6:00 pm, I left early enough to get her.
I also got to spend some time with a friend who has a different schedule than me on Wednesday afternoon which was a special treat for me. Since I work suck crazy hours and long hours it is hard sometimes to fit everything in because my schedule does not always line up with other schedules. It was a very nice afternoon and I am excited I had a few hours of downtime to just relax.
While I have not been on campus this week much I am hearing that teachers are upset and the union is getting involved. As many of you know who read my blog, this is my worst nightmare mainly because I have no experience with Unions. Yes, I know that at some point I need to have experience and better now than later but I feel like I get blind-sighted with these issues. I really thought and honestly believed that all was well and we were moving forward with the school and district initiatives and then all of a sudden WHAM!!!! Nothing that is happening on campus is bad for students and yes, we are busy, but we are all busy! On top of that to be perfectly honest, there is about 165 minutes a week that teachers should be on campus and due to how we interpreted the contract and set up expectations, we expected the teachers would use the 165 minutes but now it looks like they are not using it effectively and therefore they are complaining their plates are full. I am sympathetic. I really am!! I remember having to find time here and there, on the weekend and summer to get stuff done because it is what is best for kids, the department and the curriculum. I just have a hard time when you don't look for a solution and jump ahead of the hierarchy of problems solving.

Today was the first day this week I was on campus all day and while I loved it, it was a hard day for me. Today was one of those days where I say six students that I have been working closely with over the last year. All of them have tough home lives and are struggling to graduate or even do well in school. It is hard to hear all the struggles these students face. I know the greatest gift I can give them is a listening ear, a sounding board and help them to develop skills in order to create goals and strategies to be successful.
The girls Volleyball Team won again this afternoon which is FABULOUS!! They are doing awesome. I then ate dinner with Ali and her son on the way to the Football game at Valley View in which the team won. This is great because they have not had a great season and getting some wins in is phenomenal for the boys. It was great to get to see them play and win. After this event, I took off driving to Palm Springs in order to spend the night with Liz so I could present with her at the CMC conference on Saturday morning. We stayed at The Saguaro which is an old hotel with a colorful twist on modernization. I got there around 10:30 pm and ended up crashing pretty hard!!

Liz and I presented this morning and it seemed to go pretty well. It was a little hard to get started but we were able to move forward even with the LCD projector cutting off twice and a new one having to be brought in. We have about 14 participants in our session and everyone seemed very interested in the topic! Jeff and Kelli were there to be supportive and helpful as well so it was great to see some friendly faces in the crowd. After that presentation, I went to the exhibit hall to work in the booth for TI. I had a session to do there as well. It was great to get to talk with Cat, Kelly, Vince, Katie, Rick and everyone else. I enjoy being around the TI people so much!!! I also met Kara from RUSD for yogurt that afternoon and it was great to catch up with her and just relax. We walked around Palm Springs rather than drive so it was interesting to see some of the stores and people that were around.
I met up with Cat, Jeff, Allison, Kelli, Rick and Jennifer that night for dinner. We took the AirTram up to the top of the San Jacinto mountain and ate dinner at The Peaks restaurant. It was a great ride, dinner and conversation with great friends! It is always good to see all of them and talk about what is going on in our lives.
I got home from Palm Springs around 10:30 on Saturday night and after being up since 6:00 am, I was exhausted and ready to sleep! I unpacked a few items but ended up crashing rather quickly!

This morning started at 7:00 am with a shower, laundry and getting ready to leave for Julian, CA with friends. Julian was a gold mining town and when the gold ran out it became an area for apples and pears to be grown. Now it is a tourist town that reminds me of Ashville, NC with a lot of small shops and places to eat. We ate lunch at a place called Romano's and it was YUMMY!!! I had mushroom ravioli and it was some of the best I have ever had. I would love to go back and eat there again.
Lunch was so good that it was hard to save room for apple pie so we ended up getting some to take home. I hope to go back sometime soon and get a apple dumpling!!! I mean, how could you refuse one of these cute little apples!!!
It was a busy weekend and while I got a lot done with friends, I did not get much done around the apartment. However, I did not do anything really for work and it was nice to have a break for the weekend. I know that I will "pay" for it this week, but it was worth it!
